Everyone needs a good go-to guacamole and this my friends is truly the BEST guacamole recipe out there! I love the bright, fresh flavors and every bite is bursting with creamy avocado, tangy lime, aromatic cilantro and a kick of spice thanks to the jalapeño. This is so much better than store-bought guacamole that is typically filled with artificial ingredients. This homemade guacamole recipe only has high-quality ingredients that are fresh and taste better than most Mexican restaurants!
Why You’ll Love This
- Quick and easy – this guacamole easily comes together in just 10 minutes with simple, fresh ingredients.
- Fresh ingredients – packed with ripe avocados, fresh tomatoes, onion, jalapeño, cilantro, garlic and zesty lime.
- Healthy – avocados are rich in essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants while also being a great source of healthy fats and fiber. This guac is also gluten-free, dairy-free, paleo, vegan and low in carbs.
- Versatile – this easy guacamole is perfect as an appetizer with crispy tortilla chips and veggies or a delicious topping for tacos, burrito bowls, burgers and more!
Ingredients You’ll Need
- avocados – you’ll need 3 ripe haas avocados and you’ll know they are ripe when they slightly give when you press into the skin
- tomatoes – I like using grape or cherry tomatoes when making guacamole because they are sweeter with less juice, but roma tomatoes will work great too.
- limes – this is a must and adds a nice zesty flavor to this guacamole. Just make sure to use freshly squeezed lime juice as bottled lime juice can have a bitter taste.
- red onion – adds a nice color and crunch to this delicious guacamole. You could also use a white onion or green onions in this recipe if you don’t have a red onion.
- jalapeno pepper – adds the perfect kick! Jalapeños aren’t too hot, but feel free to omit this if you don’t want a spicy guacamole. If you want this spicier, feel free to use serrano peppers or even a sprinkle of cayenne pepper.
- garlic – you can use fresh chopped garlic cloves or minced garlic from the jar.
- cilantro – I LOVE the taste of cilantro leaves so I’m pretty heavy-handed, however if you are not a fan, feel free to use chopped parsley, fresh basil or other herbs.
- cumin – a little goes a long way and really adds a little extra flavor to this guac.
- salt + pepper – brings all these flavors together!
How to Make Chunky Guacamole
- Prep ingredients. Finely chop the tomatoes, red onion, jalapeño and fresh cilantro using a sharp knife. Slice the avocados, remove the pits and scoop out the flesh into a large mixing bowl.
- Mash avocados. Add in the lime juice and kosher salt then gently mash the avocados using a fork or potato masher. You’ll want a creamy yet slightly chunky texture.
- Mix everything together. Add in the tomatoes, red onion, garlic, lime zest, jalapeño, cilantro and cumin, mixing well. Taste and season with additional salt, if needed.
Tips for the Best Guacamole
- Use ripe avocados – you’ll know they are ripe when they slightly give when you press into the skin. If they are too firm, you can leave them on the counter for a day or two.
- Dice ingredients evenly – this ensures all the ingredients are evenly distributed and that the guacamole has a good balance of flavor and texture.
- Serve fresh – you’ll want to serve this as soon as possible after making to keep that vibrant color, flavor and freshness.
- Keep it green – avocados start to turn brown pretty quickly due to oxidation so I like to press plastic wrap (or cling film) directly onto the surface of the leftover guacamole when storing to minimize the browning.
How to Serve
- Appetizer – serve as a dip with salty tortilla chips, pita chips or fresh veggies for game days, parties or a delicious snack.
- As a topping – spoon this onto tacos, nachos, burgers, salads and more! Here are some great ideas: loaded bell pepper nachos, cilantro lime chicken tacos, easy shrimp fajitas, and taco lettuce wraps.
- As a spread – avocado toast anyone?! I love this spread on burgers as well.
Prepping and Storage
Guacamole is best served as fresh as possible as avocados can brown pretty quickly due to oxidation. To prevent the guacamole from browning, transfer to a sealed, airtight container and press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guac before sealing with a lid. This creates a barrier to the oxygen.
When stored properly, guacamole should last 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator. However, I recommend eating this guacamole as soon as possible for maximum freshness!
